Uddina Hittu

Do you know that there is a community called Shivalli in coastal Karnataka, which consumes raw udid dal?
Yes as a substitute to meat protein. It is called uddinahittu. Let me give you the recipe.
Ingredients:
Udid dal – 1 Tb. sp
Curds – 1 cup
Hing – a pinch
salt – as per taste
green chillies – 2 -3
ginger – 1 inch piece.
For seasoning: 3 spoons of coconut oil, curry leaves, mustard, udid dal and curd chillies.
Preparation
Wash and soak udid in water for an hour. grind it with curds salt and hing. add water if required and bring it into pouring consistence. Add finely cut green chillies and ginger. Heat oil for seasoning. Add a spoon of mustard seeds. When it splutters, add udid dal, when the dal changes colour, add curry leaves and curd chillies. When the chillies are fried add it to the ground udid dal. Add a spoon of raw coconut oil to Uddina hittu. Relish with hot white rice.
